|| || || || What is Funk Music?Funk originated in the 1960s in the African American communities and was highly influenced by the soul music of the day. James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Meters were all popular performers. Songs such as George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog,” James Brown’s “Sex Machine” and “I Feel Good” were all popular hits. It became its own definitive genre by the 1970s, with performers such as Rick James and his mega-hit “Super Freak” and Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” The most remarkable aspect of Funk music is that its syncopated rhythms are easy to dance to, making it fun for weddings and other events. Funk uses complex rhythms while incorporating simple song structures. Powerful, rhythm-oriented instruments such as horns and bass and even violins on occasion are all used to create a danceable beat. Notable bassists include Bootsy Collins and George Porter, Jr. Funk guitarists usually play in a percussive style, commonly using the “wah-wah” sound effect. Muted notes add musical texture and are used in riffs to strengthen the guitar’s percussive elements. Jimi Hendrix popularized this style, now known as “funk rock.” George Clinton is one of the most eminent funk rock guitarists. The term “funk” is of a rather indecent origin. It was once defined as the body odor or smell of sexual intercourse. African-American musicians initially applied the term to music with a slow groove, which later bore a more hard-driving rhythm because of the word’s association with intercourse. “Funky” typically described these musical qualities. Artists would typically yell in the studio, “Now put some stank (stink/funk) Funk bears an everlasting presence on the music world. Disco and hip-hop have both been influenced by funk’s unique sound.
