|| || || || What is Irish / Celtic Music?Celtic and Irish music are both genres of music that have originated in Western Europe. Both genres encompass an array of traditional music that share many commonalities. The most important instrument in both Irish and Celtic music is the fiddle. Irish music has been looked to by those in other countries wishing to return to their Irish/Celtic roots. Initially Celtic music originated in the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, Northumbria, Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias, and even northern Portugal. Irish and Scottish artists only produce music under the Celtic moniker when the market persists. The purpose of this music was to celebrate joyous occasions such as weddings and saints’ days. The fiddle is the most prominent instrument in celebratory Celtic music, followed by the bodhrán (a single-handed drum). The harp is exclusive to banquets. Popular in Celtic culture is the ceilidh (“KAY-lee”) which in the celtic language describes pub sessions. Traditional dances such as reels, jigs, and hornpipes commonly occur in times of celebration. These dances largely differ in tempo and time signature. The music of the Celtic and Irish nations bears prominent impact in popular music coming out of Ireland and Britain. Popular rock bands such as U2, Horslips, Clannad, The Cranberries, The Corrs, Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy, Ciarán Farrell, Sinéad O’Connor, My Bloody Valentine, Rory Gallagher, Republic of Loose, The Pogues and Westlife have not shied away from blending traditional Irish tunes with contemporary sounds. Irish music has also had a lasting impact on country music in the Americas. Click here to book Irish / Celtic Music for your event!
