What is Latin Music?

One of the strongest influences on Latin American music — or “Latin music” — is African music. This influence can be seen throughout its various genres, as the basis for music ranging from the Cuban Rumba, the Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena, the Colombian Cumbia, and the Brazilian Samba, which influenced Bossa Nova and Tango music. The combination of Spanish, African and European music can be seen throughout popular music, including the genres of Rock, Ska, Jazz, R&B, and Reggae.
Latin music encompasses the music of many different Latin American countries and also many genres. From the rural Conjuto music of Mexico to the cosmopolitan Habanera of Cuba, and everything in-between, Latin music is diverse and unique. Sometimes it may seem that the only unifying theme in the varied styles of Latin music is the Spanish or Portuguese language.
The music of Latin America can be categorized by region. The Andean region includes the music of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile and Venezuela. Central American music includes El Salvador, Belize, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The Spanish and French-speaking islands located in the Caribbean Sea, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Martinique and Guadeloupe comprise the Caribbean region. Due to its large size and diversity, Brazil is considered its own region. This is also due to the fact that Brazil has a unique history as the first Portuguese colony. Though Spain is certainly far-removed from Latin America, both areas have equally influenced the music of each other. Latin music also contains elements of both European and American music.
Throughout the regions of Latin America, various styles of music evolved, including the Brazilian Bossa Nova, the Argentinean Tango, the Dominican Meringue, the Mexican Mariachi, and the Puerto Rican style of Reggaton, a fusion traditional Puerto Rican music and modern Hip Hop.
